Help
Short answers about Belayr. In an emergency, call 911: Belayr tells the people you chose, and is not connected to emergency services.
Getting started
How do I get an account?
Belayr is invite-only during the beta. With an invite code, create your account at belayr.io/app/invite. Codes come from people already using Belayr, so if you know someone on it, ask them for one. Without a code, join the waitlist and you will hear from us when the next batch of invites goes out.
What does it cost?
Using it yourself, walking home or showing a house, is free. A brokerage that runs a desk pays $9 per agent per month, and its agents keep their personal use free on the same login, whether or not the brokerage keeps paying.
Do my contacts need to install anything?
No. Your contacts get a text with a link that opens in any browser.
Why can I not start a timer yet?
Belayr will not let you arm until at least one contact has agreed to be told. Send them their link from Contacts. A timer nobody receives protects nobody.
Timers and checking in
How does a timer work?
Pick how long you will be. Check in with your safe word before it reaches zero and nothing happens. If you do not, your contacts are told, with your last location, the route you took and what to do next.
What if my phone dies or loses signal?
The timer runs on Belayr's servers, not on your phone, so it keeps counting. Your contacts get the last place your phone reported and the direction you were heading.
Can I add time?
Yes, from the countdown screen. In a browser with notifications on you can also add time from the notification itself. The iPhone app gets the warning notification too, but adding time there happens with the app open.
Will I be warned before my contacts are told?
With notifications on, you get one five minutes before the timer is due. Two minutes before, you get a text if you turned texts on; otherwise a notification, if notifications are on. The details are on the Text messages page.
How do open houses work?
On Meeting someone, tap "Hosting an open house?": one timer covers three hours and asks you to check in every 30 minutes, so you are never unwatched for hours at a time. Check in each time it asks, and when you leave, choose "The meeting is over".
Can I try it without scaring anyone?
Yes: send a practice alert from the home screen. Your contacts get the real thing, plainly marked as practice, so the first alert they ever see is not at two in the morning.
The safe word and the panic button
What is the safe word for?
You type it to check in. And when a contact calls after an alert, they ask for it: saying it tells them you are free to talk.
What if someone makes me check in?
Type anything other than your safe word. Your screen shows an ordinary check-in, and your contacts are alerted anyway. The same goes on the phone: say anything else, confidently, and a contact treats it as trouble without letting on.
I forgot my safe word.
Belayr never shows it back to you, so it is not on your phone for anyone holding that phone to find. Replace it in Contacts, and your contacts are told it changed.
What does the panic button do?
Hold it and your contacts are alerted straight away, without waiting for the timer. The hold is so a pocket cannot press it. With a keyboard or a switch, it asks you to confirm instead.
Your contacts
What do my contacts see?
Nothing at all unless an alert goes out. Then a page with where you were, your route, your battery, the showing details if it was a showing, and a script: call you and ask for the word, and call 911 if the answer is wrong.
How does somebody become my contact?
Add them in Contacts and send them their link. Belayr texts nobody until they have agreed to it themselves.
Can a contact stop getting alerts?
Yes, at any time, by replying STOP. You will see that they can no longer be reached, so you are never relying on somebody who will not hear from us.
Brokerages and the desk
What can my brokerage see?
While a showing timer runs: your name, the address you entered and the clock. Where you are, only if that timer fires. Never a walk home or any other personal timer, and never the route of a showing that ended fine. The full list is in the Privacy Policy.
How do I join my brokerage?
With the code or link your brokerage gives you, from Settings, under Brokerage. Nobody can add you, and you can leave at any time. Your own safety net stays yours either way. New to Belayr? You need an account of your own first, and while Belayr is invite-only that takes an invite: the desk code joins the desk, but it is not one, so ask your brokerage for Belayr's sign-up link.
How does a brokerage get started?
Book a walkthrough on the brokerages page, or start a desk yourself from Settings, under Brokerage, and invite your agents with its code. While Belayr is invite-only, agents new to it also need a sign-up link for their own accounts: ask for one when you book.
What does the desk cost?
$9 per agent per month, billed to the brokerage, with no minimum. The owner and office managers are free. The first ten offices pay $5 per agent for their first year, and paying yearly gets two months free. If a desk stops being paid for, its agents keep everything that protects them.
Signing in and your account
How do I sign in on a computer?
Set a password in Settings on your phone, then sign in at belayr.io with your email and that password. Signing in this way never signs your phone out.
I forgot my password.
Choose "Forgot your password?" on the sign-in page and Belayr emails you a link, as long as you confirmed your email in Settings. Or set a new one in Settings on your phone, which does not ask for the old one.
Why does Belayr ask me to confirm my email?
So a link to set a new password can reach you if you forget it. Belayr emails an address nothing else until you confirm it, so a typo at sign-up cannot hand your account to whoever owns the mistyped address. In Settings, under Password and devices, choose Email me a code, then type in the six digits it sends.
How do I change my email?
In Settings, under Password and devices, choose Change email. Do it on the device you set Belayr up on, usually your phone. Belayr emails a code to the new address, and it becomes your email once you type the code in. If your old address was confirmed, it gets a note saying the email changed.
I lost my phone.
Sign in on your new phone with the recovery code you wrote down when you set Belayr up. It signs out every other device, and your contacts are told you signed in on a new one.
How do I delete my account?
In Settings, under Delete your account. It removes your contacts, your safe word, every timer and every location Belayr recorded, and there is no copy kept. The one exception, while an alert of yours is still live, is explained in the Privacy Policy.
Privacy
Does Belayr track me?
Only while a timer is running, and for a few minutes after you check in, for a reason the Privacy Policy explains. Nothing is collected between timers.
How long is my location kept?
Seven days after a timer that ended normally, then deleted. Ninety days after one that triggered an alert, because that is when someone may need it.
Does Belayr sell my data or show ads?
No. There are no ads, no analytics trackers and no third-party marketing tools.
